Why Nutrition Matters When You're On Weight Loss Medication

Please note: I am a nutritionist, not a doctor or nurse. I do not prescribe, supply or advise on the injections themselves - that side of your care sits with your prescribing clinician. My role is the nutrition support that runs alongside them.

So while your clinician looks after the medication, my focus is supporting your nutrition.   The medication helps with appetite, but it doesn't tell you what to eat, how much protein your body needs to maintain muscle, or how to keep your energy steady through a long week.

Here's what most people often aren't told:

The number on the scales can drop fast - but not all of it is fat.

Scale weight reflects total body mass fat, water, glycogen, gut content and lean tissue. A drop on the scales doesn't always mean the same amount of body fat has been lost, especially early on. Muscle loss can happen during weight loss but it isn't inevitable. The aim is fat loss while preserving muscle, through an evidence-based deficit, enough protein, regular resistance training, consistent movement, and good recovery.

Side effects aren't always random.

Symptoms such as fatigue and constipation can link back to how, when and what you're eating.

Coming off the medication is the part most people skip planning for.

If you don't plan to stay on the injection long term, this period is a chance to build the eating habits and routines that will help you maintain your results afterwards.

Weight loss medications are a powerful tool. Used well, and with proper nutrition and exercise alongside, they can be genuinely life-changing.

Free High Protein Guide

Protein plays an important role in maintaining muscle during weight loss, but eating enough can be more difficult when your appetite is reduced.

Who This Support Is For

This is for those who recognise themselves here:

  • You've started a weight loss medication and want to do it properly, not just "see what happens."
  • You've tried to lose weight before, lost it, and watched it creep back - and you don't want that cycle again.
  • You're confused by the conflicting advice about what to eat while on these medications: high protein? Low carb? Fasting? More fibre? You've heard it all.
  • You want results, but you also want to come out the other side with a body and a routine you can actually maintain.

If that sounds like you, you're in the right place.

What I Can Help You With

This isn't another meal plan to follow for three weeks and abandon. It's practical, evidence-based nutrition support designed around the injection journey and your real life.

1.  Preserving muscle while losing fat

Muscle loss isn't inevitable during weight loss - but it can happen, especially with a large deficit, low protein, or no training. We focus on the things that protect lean mass: enough protein at the right times, encouraging regular resistance training, consistent daily movement, and good recovery. The aim is fat loss while keeping as much muscle as possible - not just a lower number on the scales.

2.  Managing side effects through food

Simple, repeatable adjustments to meal timing, fibre, fluids and food choices that take the edge off nausea, bloating, constipation and energy dips - without it taking over your week.

3.  A clear, simple eating framework (not another diet)

You don't need more rules. You need a handful of reliable ones. We'll agree on a small set of principles you can use at home, at restaurants, on holiday and on the days everything goes sideways.

4.  Building the habits that keep weight off

While the medication is doing the heavy lifting on appetite, that's the perfect window to bed in the routines that mean you don't need it forever. We work on the patterns, not just the portions.

5.  Honest, evidence-based answers to the noise

Should you be fasting? Do you need to balance your blood sugar? Is cortisol stalling you? I'll help you cut through the conflicting misinformation out there.

What This Isn't

  • It's not a fad diet on top of the jab.
  • It's not a generic high-protein meal plan that ignores your real life.
  • It's not "eat less and move more" - you've heard that before and it never told the whole story.
  • It's not a promise that the weight will never return. It's a structured, evidence-based approach to making that far less likely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be on a specific injection to work with you?

No. I support women on any weight loss medication, as well as those who have recently come off them and want to maintain their results.

I've barely any appetite, do I still need nutrition support?

Especially then.  A small appetite makes it easy to under-eat protein, fibre and overall nutrients. That's when muscle loss, fatigue and side effects may creep in. We focus on getting the right things in, in portions that feel doable.

I've lost weight on the jab before and put it back on. How is this different?

Most women who regain weren't given a plan for the period after their medication. We build that in from the start - using the medication window to install the habits that carry you forward without it.

I'm overwhelmed by all the advice out there. Where do I start?

That's the most common thing I hear. We start by ignoring most of it and agreeing on the few things that genuinely matter for you. Clarity first, everything else follows.

Ready To Make The Most Of This Window?

Whether you've just had your first dose or you're months in and feel like you're guessing, you don't have to figure this out alone.
